“There was a man sent from God
whose name was John.” John 1:6-7
“‘The Lord called me from
birth, from my mother’s womb he gave me my name. ….You are my servant,
he said to me, through whom I show my glory.’
Though I thought I had toiled in vain, and for nothing uselessly
spent my strength, yet my reward is with my God. …
I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach
the ends of the earth.” Isaiah 49:1-6
“I give thanks that I am
fearfully, wonderfully made; wonderful are your works.” Psalm 139
“You, child, will be called
prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his
way.” Luke 1:76
“All who heard these things
took them to heart, saying, ‘What then will this child be?’
For surely the hand of the Lord is with this child.” Luke 1:57-66
“Through the tender compassion
of our God, the dawn from on high shall break upon us.” Luke 1:78
John’s
mother Elizabeth, said of her cousin Mary “you are blessed because you
believe the words God spoke to you.”
The words in all of today’s reading were spoken of John the
Baptist. It would be a good
“exercise” for all of us to reread the words quoted in this bulletin
while substituting our own name for John’s name beginning with: “There
was [a person] sent from God whose name was______”.
“The Lord called me from birth…”
It is all true. This
is the way God speaks, what God speaks to us in the Bible, in Baptism, in
Communion. Like John the
Baptist we too should “leap for joy.”
