“And
he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his
clothes became white as light.”( Mt.17:1-9)
“Go
forth…to the land that I will show you.” (Genesis12:1-4)
Imagine being on the mountain
with Jesus and Peter, James, and John.
How to begin to understand what happened! Matthew describes an
intimate experience that Jesus shared with a few of his close friends.
And, a most important lesson they would need to learn: ”Do not be
afraid.”
What mountain top experiences have you
had---moments of insight, moments of communion, a heightened awareness of
God’s presence? These moments indeed are to be treasured and to be
remembered in the dark nights! Yet,
these moments are not the end of our prayer.
They are actually only its beginning and an invitation to discern
where God is leading us in those moments. We must “go forth” and live
out those insights concretely, with the assurance that God is always with
us no matter how difficult the task ahead.
Peter
got it right when he said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are
here.” As for our family of
faith, though, some are missing. How can we convince them that Jesus wants
all of us to be with him? Pray
to the Holy Spirit this week for the guidance to speak God’s words of
invitation and welcome. www.CatholicsComeHomeBoston.org.
